Our garden is one of the best places in the country for seeing poison dart frogs in their natural habitat.  4 different dendrobateae species can be sighted on a visit to the garden, and visitors are guaranteed to see the red poison dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) in the wild.

Finca la Isla sits between mountains and sea on the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Over 40 acres of lush primary rainforest act as the backdrop to the many activities here on our permaculture farm: the Botanical Garden with its large collection of exotic and native plants and trees; orchards producing quality organic fruits; an ornamental plant nursery specializing in bromeliads; our black pepper and vanilla growing areas; our jungle office where we meet with landscape and farming clients; and our kitchen where we prepare delicious organic sweets and savouries from our harvest for sale at the local farmers’ market. We are also working on several community-oriented and environmental projects and are interested in forming strategic alliances and learning about other grassroots initiatives.

At Finca la Isla, we believe that permaculture farming provides a model for a sustainable, middle class Costa Rican standard of living and it is our goal to demonstrate to the local community of farmers that working with the land in a healthy and responsible way has positive social, environmental and financial outcomes. Organic permaculture principles guide everything that we do here at the farm. Our botanical garden project aims to reach out to the international, eco-tourist community and to the local community in general to educate on issues related to sustainable living.  We strive to be self-sufficient and receive no outside help in the form of grants or other funding, rather the work we do with our own hands on our own land rewards us with abundance and a sense of freedom.
